HYROX
/ ˈhaɪrɒks / · proper noun
Also: Hyrox, HYROX competition, HYROX race
HYROX is a global functional-fitness race format founded in Hamburg, Germany in 2017 by Christian Toetzke and Moritz Fürste. A race combines 8 × 1 km runs with 8 functional workouts in a fixed sequence: the same eight stations in the same order at every event worldwide. Standardized format means times can be compared across races and seasons.
The 8 stations (in order)
- SkiErg: 1000 m
- Sled push: 50 m
- Sled pull: 50 m
- Burpee broad jumps: 80 m
- RowErg: 1000 m
- Farmer's carry: 200 m
- Sandbag lunges: 100 m
- Wall balls: 75 (women) or 100 (men) reps
Each station is preceded by a 1 km run on a fixed indoor track. Total distance: 8 km running + ~480 m of stations = approximately 8.5 km of work.
Divisions
HYROX runs in three primary formats:
- Singles: one athlete completes all 8 stations. Variants: Open Men, Open Women, Pro Men, Pro Women.
- Doubles: two athletes alternate stations and runs. Same total distance and station volume. Variants: Doubles Men, Doubles Women, Mixed Doubles.
- Relay: four athletes split the work. Each athlete runs 2 km and completes 2 stations.
Pro divisions use heavier loads on weighted stations (sled push, farmer's carry, sandbag, wall ball). Pro is the qualifying division for World Championship: a sub-60-minute Pro time is the rough threshold for top-100 international finishers.
Pro Series + age groups
The HYROX Pro Series is the elite tier: invitation-only based on prior race times. Pro Series athletes race the full Pro standards on a separate competitive heat with prize money + sponsor visibility.
Age groups apply within Open: 16-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+. Each age group has its own ranking but races on the same standards as Open.
Season structure
A HYROX season runs roughly October to August. Athletes compete at city events (Stuttgart, Anaheim, Manchester, Madrid, Tokyo, etc.). Results aggregate to a season ranking. The season culminates at the HYROX World Championship in Nice (typically June).
The science
HYROX is functionally a hybrid of running, strength endurance, and aerobic capacity. Performance correlates strongly with:
- VO2max (aerobic ceiling)
- Lactate threshold pace at 4 mmol/L
- Strength endurance: 100+ reps at moderate load
- Recovery economy: heart rate recovery between stations
This combination is why hybrid athletes tend to dominate. Pure endurance runners struggle with sled work. Pure strength athletes blow up on the running portions. The athletes at the top of the field train both: typically 60-70% running volume + 30-40% functional/strength work.
Why it grew so fast
HYROX scaled from a single 2017 Hamburg event to a global circuit racing across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East: over 100 events per season by 2026. The reasons:
- Standardized format: a sub-60 in Anaheim is a sub-60 in Stuttgart. CrossFit doesn't have this comparability across events.
- Beginner-accessible Pro tier exists: the Open division is genuinely doable for moderately fit athletes who train 4-6 months. Lower barrier than Spartan Beast or Ironman.
- Race-day spectacle: indoor venues, professional production, controlled pacing. Spectator-friendly.
- Network effects: athletes train at affiliated gyms → gyms become more committed → more events get hosted there.
