DEKA vs HYROX: how the two hybrid races differ

DEKA FIT is ten zones with a 500m run before each, 5km of running in total. HYROX is eight stations with a 1km run before each, 8km in total. DEKA also runs no-running and short-running formats at local gyms, while HYROX times only count at official events.

DEKA (run by Spartan) and HYROX (founded in Hamburg in 2017) are both indoor races that alternate running with functional fitness work in a fixed order, so both produce times you can compare across events. They differ in how much running there is, which movements appear, and where you are allowed to race.

Which movements do DEKA and HYROX share?

Both races include a rower, a SkiErg, a sled and a farmer's carry, at different distances:

  • Row and ski: 500m each in DEKA, 1,000m each in HYROX.
  • Farmer's carry: 100m in DEKA, 200m in HYROX.
  • Sled: DEKA uses a magnetic-resistance sled pushed and pulled 10m at a time for 100m. HYROX has a separate 50m sled push and 50m sled pull on a weighted sled.

DEKA-only zones are the RAM reverse lunges, box step or jump overs, the med ball sit-up throw, the air bike, the dead ball over and the weighted burpee. HYROX-only stations are the burpee broad jumps, sandbag lunges and wall balls. DEKA zones explained has every DEKA standard and load.

Is DEKA FIT shorter than HYROX?

Yes, by a wide margin. The DEKA FIT men's record is 28:28, per the leaderboard compiled by The Fitness Experiment. HYROX has 3km more running and longer erg and carry distances on top, so even elite HYROX times run well past that. The two races reward different pacing: DEKA's 500m runs are closer to repeated hard efforts, HYROX's 1km runs to a sustained threshold pace. DEKA FIT times breaks down where the minutes go.

Where can you race DEKA and HYROX?

DEKA STRONG and DEKA MILE are hosted by affiliate gyms on scheduled event days, hand timed by a judge, and those results go on the same global leaderboard as arena events. DEKA FIT itself is produced by Spartan DEKA in large indoor venues. HYROX results only count at official HYROX events, which means travelling to a host city. For an athlete without an arena event nearby, DEKA STRONG is often the only official hybrid race within reach.

Which race suits which athlete?

  • Strong runners: HYROX. Eight kilometres of running is the largest single block of work, and pacing it well decides most results.
  • Strength and CrossFit athletes: DEKA STRONG or DEKA MILE. Little or no running, and a wider movement library that rewards gym skills.
  • Athletes who want a test close to home: DEKA STRONG at an affiliate gym, which needs no travel and counts on the global leaderboard.
  • Athletes chasing one big event a season: either. Both run world championships with qualification through the season.

Can you train for DEKA and HYROX at the same time?

Yes, because the base is the same: running under fatigue plus sled, carry, row and ski work. Add race-specific practice for the movements the other race does not have, and match your run training to the race: repeated 500m efforts for DEKA FIT, sustained 1km repeats for HYROX. The 12-week plans on hybridtraining.guide are built for HYROX and cover the shared base, the HYROX finish-time predictor estimates a HYROX time from your current fitness, and HYROX-affiliated gyms stock most of the equipment both races use.

FAQ

What is the difference between DEKA and HYROX?
DEKA FIT has ten zones with a 500m run before each (5km of running), while HYROX has eight stations with a 1km run before each (8km of running). DEKA also comes in a no-running format (STRONG) and a short-running format (MILE) that affiliate gyms host, whereas HYROX times only count at official HYROX events.
Is DEKA easier than HYROX?
DEKA FIT is shorter: the men's record is 28:28, and HYROX's 8km of running alone takes most athletes longer than that. DEKA's 500m runs are raced faster, though, and its ten zones include lunges, box overs and a dead ball that HYROX does not have.
Can HYROX training prepare you for DEKA?
Mostly yes. Both races are repeated running under fatigue plus sled, carry, row and ski work, so the engine carries over. What HYROX training does not cover is DEKA's RAM lunges and burpees, the box overs, the med ball sit-up throw, the air bike and the dead ball, which need specific practice to the DEKA standards.
Which should I do first, DEKA or HYROX?
If you have never raced either, DEKA STRONG or DEKA MILE at a local affiliate gym is the lowest-cost first step, because there is little or no running and no travel to an arena. If running is your strength, HYROX suits you better, since 8km of running is the largest single block of work in the race.
