An endurance training methodology popularized by Norwegian distance runners (notably Jakob Ingebrigtsen, world champion in the 1500m and 5000m) and triathletes (the Iden / Blummenfelt / Stornes group). The signature pattern: high-volume, double-threshold workouts in which two threshold sessions are performed in a single day, with intensity carefully controlled below the lactate accumulation point (typically 2-3 mmol/L blood lactate).
The double-threshold day
A typical Norwegian-method threshold day looks like:
- Morning session: 10-15 km of intervals at 2.0-2.5 mmol/L lactate (e.g., 5 × 2km @ 3:20/km with 1-2 min rest)
- Afternoon session: 8-12 km at the same lactate range, often shorter intervals (e.g., 25 × 400m @ goal pace)
- Total volume: 18-27 km of threshold work in a single day, all controlled below LT2
The key innovation: by staying just below the lactate accumulation point, athletes can perform 2-3× more weekly threshold volume than traditional models allow without overreaching.
Why it works
- Sub-threshold sweet spot: training at 2.0-2.5 mmol/L drives mitochondrial and capillary adaptation without the cortisol and CNS fatigue of LT2-or-above work
- Volume drives adaptation: mitochondrial biogenesis is dose-dependent: more sub-threshold work = more aerobic capacity
- Lactate-guided intensity: using portable lactate meters (rather than heart rate or perceived effort) keeps athletes precisely in the target zone, day after day
Required equipment
- Portable lactate meter (Lactate Plus, Edge, Nova): ~$200 plus strips at $1-2 per test
- 10-20 lactate strips per week of threshold training
- Heart rate monitor (chest strap preferred for accuracy)
Common pitfalls
- Skipping the meter: "feels easy" perceived effort is unreliable. Athletes drift to LT2 and accumulate fatigue without realizing it.
- Adding without removing: this volume replaces high-intensity intervals. Adding sub-threshold work on top of an existing program guarantees overtraining.
- Wrong pace baseline: the target lactate sets the pace, not the other way around. Pace fluctuates with sleep, fueling, and weather.
For hybrid athletes
The Norwegian method is highly compatible with hybrid training because sub-threshold work has lower CNS impact than VO2max intervals, leaving more recovery for strength sessions. Many HYROX competitors now adopt a modified Norwegian model with one double-threshold day per week, replacing traditional VO2max-style intervals. The lactate-meter discipline is the entry barrier: without it, the method drifts toward overtraining.
Limits
- Best validated for distance running; cycling adoption is less common but growing in time-trial events
- Time-intensive: double sessions require 4-5 hours per training day
- Most useful for athletes who already have a deep aerobic base; novices benefit more from polarized models
