EMOM
/ ˈiːmɒm / · noun (acronym)
Also: Every Minute On the Minute, on-the-minute
An acronym standing for "Every Minute On the Minute": a workout structure in which the athlete performs a fixed amount of work at the start of each minute, then rests for whatever remains of that minute before the next set begins.
Format
- Duration: typically 10-30 minutes
- Per-minute work: a fixed rep count (e.g., 10 burpees) OR a fixed time-cap effort (e.g., row to 100 calories within the minute)
- Rest: whatever remains of the minute after work is complete
How to set the work load
Calibrate so that work takes 30-45 seconds, leaving 15-30 seconds of rest. If work consistently spills past the minute, the load is too high: drop it 10-20%. If work finishes in <20 seconds, raise the load.
Use cases
- Skill practice under fatigue: 12-min EMOM × 5 muscle-ups builds technical capacity without total exhaustion
- Aerobic capacity: EMOMs of 80-90% VO2max work (e.g., 10 cal AssaultBike) for 20+ minutes drive aerobic adaptation
- Strength volume: EMOM × 3 reps at 75% 1RM for 12-16 minutes adds neural-quality strength volume
- Pacing constraint: the structure forces the athlete to hold back early: preventing the "go too fast then crash" pattern of unstructured workouts
EMOM vs AMRAP
- EMOM: work-rest ratio is fixed; output is mostly fixed; "score" is whether you completed all rounds at the prescribed load
- AMRAP: work-rest ratio is athlete-chosen; output varies; score is total volume
- EMOMs teach pacing discipline; AMRAPs test pacing skill
For hybrid athletes
EMOMs are heavily used in hybrid programming because the structured rest allows for higher-quality work than continuous AMRAPs at similar volumes. A typical HYROX-prep EMOM: 16 minutes, alternating 200m run + 20 wall balls every 2 minutes. The aerobic-and-station combo trains race-specific transitions.
