Ironman 70.3 eligibility
/ ˈaɪər.mæn / · noun
Also: Ironman 70.3 entry, Half Ironman entry, Who can do an Ironman 70.3
An Ironman 70.3 has no qualification requirement to enter: you register, you pay, you race. The barriers are practical, not regulatory: the cutoff times, the equipment, and the training months required to safely complete 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling, and 21.1 km of running back-to-back.
Cutoffs you must beat
- Swim: 1 hour 10 minutes (1:10:00 at the 1.9 km buoy)
- Bike: 5 hours 30 minutes from race start (cumulative)
- Run / total: 8 hours 30 minutes from race start
Miss any cutoff, you don't finish. Roughly 5–8% of starters DNF a 70.3, the majority on the bike cutoff.
How fit do you need to be?
The honest minimum: comfortable swimming 2 km in open water, comfortable riding 90 km on a road bike at moderate effort, and comfortable running a half-marathon. Doing all three back-to-back inside 8.5 hours typically requires 6–9 months of structured training if you're starting from a fit-but-untrained baseline.
Equipment baseline
- Wetsuit (most races, water-temperature-dependent)
- Road bike with helmet (TT bike not required; aero bars optional)
- Running shoes you've put miles on
