ATHX

/ ˈæθ.ɛks / · proper noun

Also: Fitness Athletic Championships, ATHX Games, ATHX Invitational

ATHX (Fitness Athletic Championships) is a tiered hybrid fitness competition. Strength, endurance, and metcon mixed across multiple zones in a single race-style event. The defining feature is scalability: three competitive tiers (Lite, ATHX, Pro) let gym-goers and elite athletes use the same event with different movement standards.

An ATHX event runs six timed zones covering strength, endurance, and metcon conditioning. Total competitive floor time is approximately 90 minutes; total event experience including transitions, briefings, and warm-down can run up to 2.5 hours. Each zone has its own time cap, with athletes scored on reps, load, or distance within that block (rather than a single race finish time). The strength zones include barbell movements that HYROX never tests: squat, deadlift, and overhead press variants.

Tier structure

  • Lite: scaled loads and accessible movement standards for newer athletes.
  • ATHX: the standard division for trained gym-goers and hybrid athletes.
  • Pro: elite tier with heaviest loads and strictest standards. Eligible for the Invitational format.

Entries are available as Individuals or Pairs (Male, Female, or Mixed). The scalable standards make it easier than HYROX to find a competitive bracket that matches your actual ability.

Geography and growth

ATHX is UK-rooted with growing North American presence. The adidas-presented ATHX Invitational held its first North American event on Miami Beach in March 2024, introducing the ATHX Elite Individual format to US audiences. Expect continued international scheduling through 2026.

How ATHX differs from HYROX

  • Strength load: heavier compound lifts than HYROX's bodyweight-and-implement station weights.
  • Tiering: three competitive levels vs HYROX's binary Open/Pro.
  • Duration: ~90 minutes of competitive work across six zones vs HYROX's 60–120 minute continuous race.
  • Energy systems: mixes strength endurance more aggressively. You need to be strong when you're tired, not only aerobically fit.

FAQ

What is ATHX?

ATHX is a hybrid fitness competition combining strength, endurance, and functional training into a single race-style event. The UK is the brand's home base, with growing North American scheduling through 2026.

How long does ATHX last?

Approximately 90 minutes of competitive floor time across six timed zones, plus briefings, transitions, and warm-down. Total event experience can run 2.5 hours.

Is ATHX harder than HYROX?

Depends on your strengths. ATHX prioritises maximal strength and anaerobic power; HYROX prioritises aerobic capacity and running economy. Athletes who excel at pure aerobic endurance tend to find HYROX more accessible. Athletes with a strength background tend to score better at ATHX.

Is ATHX the same as HYROX?

No. HYROX is the "fitness marathon": running plus stations, aerobic-dominant. ATHX is closer to a "decathlon": strength, endurance, and metcon mixed under fatigue. They test different things. HYROX tests pacing and aerobic threshold; ATHX tests strength endurance.

Is ATHX in the US?

Yes. ATHX held its first North American event on Miami Beach in March 2024, introducing the adidas-presented Invitational format to US audiences. Expect further US scheduling through 2026.

Can you compete as a pair?

Yes. ATHX runs Individual and Pairs entries (Male, Female, or Mixed). Pairs share the workload across zones with scalable movement standards.
