GORUCK
/ ˈɡoʊ.rʌk / · proper noun
Also: GORUCK Challenge, GORUCK Tough, GORUCK Light, GORUCK Heavy
GORUCK is a team-based endurance event format built around rucking (moving on foot under the load of a weighted backpack ("ruck"). Founded in 2010 by former US Special Forces operator Jason McCarthy, GORUCK events range from short 3-hour Lights to 24-hour Heavies, all led by a "Cadre") a current or former special-operations soldier acting as event leader.
The event tiers
- Light: 4–5 hours, ~7–10 miles, 10 or 20 lb ruck
- Tough: 10–12 hours, ~15–20 miles, 20 or 30 lb ruck
- Heavy: 24+ hours, ~40+ miles, 30 or 45 lb ruck
- Selection: 48+ hours; replicates SF Selection. Pass rate under 10%.
Standard ruck weight is by event tier, plus a "brick weight" plate (most events) and water/food.
What makes it different
Unlike Spartan or HYROX, GORUCK is not timed and not racing. The Cadre dictates the pace and the tasks. Teams must finish together. Failure is collective: if one teammate falls behind, the team is set back. This breeds a different kind of athlete: less interval-fit, more durability-fit, and high in conscientiousness.
